Lisa Huntley remembers walking out of the hospital without her husband, Grant, in 1994 and thinking to herself that she never again wanted to be within those walls. In those first moments as a 26-year-old widow, she couldn’t imagine returning to the same floor where she’d spent much of the previous three months by Grant’s side as he battled melanoma for the second time. Little did she know then that her career would take shape in that same hospital and she’d one day be the assistant to Dr. John M. Kirkwood, the very doctor who supported Grant in his last few months.

About a year after Grant’s death, Lisa found herself back at that hospital in Pittsburgh (now called the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center) as a volunteer, supporting patients and family members facing the challenges she knew all too well. “I surprised even myself by going back,” she said. “But I found that it was so healing for me to be able to comfort others in that same situation I’d been through.”

Aun así, las primeras visitas fueron difíciles y evitaba el pasillo y la habitación donde se había quedado Grant. Pero con el tiempo, se hizo más fácil.

Ese mismo año, 1995, Lisa y su primo organizaron la primera de las que serían 15 salidas de golf para recaudar fondos para la investigación del melanoma. Grant era un ávido jugador de golf conocido por su sentido del humor y su amabilidad, que se manifestaba en su sonrisa y sus brillantes ojos azules.

A lo largo de los años, la salida anual de golf recaudó casi 150.000 dólares.

A finales de los años 90, Lisa se convirtió en la directora del programa de voluntariado del centro oncológico. Y en 2012, se convirtió en la administradora del Dr. Kirkwood en el programa de melanoma. Así es como se conectó por primera vez con AIM en Melanoma - el Dr. Kirkwood se sienta en la junta directiva de AIM.

En 2015, Lisa ayudó a lanzar una nueva tradición para apoyar la investigación del melanoma y mantener viva la memoria de Grant: La caminata de AIM contra el melanoma en Pittsburgh. Desde que comenzó, esa caminata ha recaudado 246.000 dólares. Y cada año, Lisa se une a amigos y familiares para formar un equipo llamado Grant's Gang, que ha recaudado más de 9.000 dólares en estos años.

Lisa is now remarried and the mother of three daughters. She’s grateful that advancements in melanoma research and treatments mean those with a recurrence of the disease likely have a brighter outlook than Grant did when he received his second diagnosis.

“There’s more hope than there’s ever been and I also think there’s a greater awareness of what the sun can do to your skin,” she said. “I’m thankful to have done my small part in that.”

Lisa nunca esperó dedicar su carrera a la investigación y concienciación sobre el melanoma. Pero sabe que Grant se sentiría honrado por su misión. Y sabe que Grant también estaría orgulloso de saber que el Dr. Kirkwood sigue siendo un líder en la lucha contra el melanoma.

"Nos trajo mucho consuelo a Grant y a mí", dijo Lisa. "Eso significó más de lo que podría expresar. Es una bendición tan completa para mí poder trabajar ahora a su lado y formar parte de su equipo mientras sigue dedicando su tiempo a acabar con esta enfermedad."
