July is UV Safety Awareness Month, and with so much time spent outdoors, practicing sun safety should be top of mind. Covering up, seeking shade, and using sunscreen are three essential sun safety practices. But with sunscreen in the news lately, you may be confused about the safety and the availability of sunscreen ingredients.

To clear up the misconceptions that exist around these ingredients, AIM has written a new report, “2022: The State of Sunscreen in the U.S.,” that covers four essential topics: (1) “New” UV Filters (2) The Monograph (3) Absorption (4) Coral Reefs and Sunscreen.

Most recently, we presented a 30-minute webinar on the topic with special guest, Sancy A. Leachman, M.D., Ph.D., John D. Gray Endowed Chair in Melanoma Research, Professor & Chair, Department of Dermatology, Oregon Health & Science University.

Over 197,000 cases of melanoma are expected to be diagnosed in the United States this year, but by being diligent in the prevention and early detection of melanoma and other skin cancers, you give yourself the best chance for good health. We can save lives by sharing facts about the dangers of unprotected sun exposure and encouraging people to check their skin for warning signs. UV Safety Awareness Month is a time for all of us to share the message that sunscreen and other sun safety practices are vital to protecting your skin.
