My Grandmother passed in her early sixties after battling Melanoma.  She had a small irregular mole on her forearm that had been there for nearly 20 years.

By the time she had the courage to have it removed, it was too late.  Excision, skin grafts, and chemotherapy were only able to prolong her existance for a short while.

Check yourselves on a regular basis, have regular check-ups with the dermatologist, and by all means if you feel like there is a problem and your dermatologist is not following-up, change dermatologists
