Winter Skin: Tips To Keep Your Kid’s Skin Safe
Winter is a great time for kids to be outdoors. Snow allows for all sorts of activities that are not possible in the summertime. However, it is important to remember that the sun shines year round and sunscreen is needed every day, not just in warm weather. UV rays reflect off the snow, so outdoor activities like sledding and skiing put your child at an increased risk of UV exposure. Even if it seems to be overcast, sunscreen is essential.
Almost 80 percent of UV radiation is reflected from snow, while only 25 percent from sand.
Tips For Ensuring Your Children Enjoy the Winter Safely:
Anytime your child goes outside, you should be using a broad-spectrum UVA and UVB sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 30, because it creates an invisible barrier between the sun’s rays and your skin.
Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before your child heads outside.
Children playing outside in the snow should wear waterproof sunscreen.
Remember snow melts! Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours when your children are spending time outside this winter.
Use a formula that agrees with your child’s skin, is gentle, and is PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid)-free.
Try using stick-style sunscreen instead of liquid on children’s faces, because it is less likely to run into their eyes.
Apply sunscreen liberally and evenly to all exposed skin. You should apply at least a teaspoon to the face.
Protect their puckers. Always wear a lip balm with an SPF 15 or higher – lips are very sensitive.
Make sure your kids have a scarf or hat with a mask that covers their faces, especially on cold, windy days.
Be sure to cover often-missed spots with sunscreen such as the lips, ears, around the eyes, the neck, the underside of the chin, scalp, and hands.
When practiced regularly, proper sun protection can become a normal part of daily life — one that will be well worth the extra effort in the years to come.
